Start with the essentials
A marking such as 205/55 R16 describes the tyre width, profile, construction and wheel diameter. It is a useful starting point when requesting a quote.
Look a little closer
The first number is the nominal width in millimetres. The second is the sidewall height as a percentage of that width. R indicates radial construction, and the final number is the wheel diameter in inches.
Think about the next step
Look beyond the size: the following numbers and letters identify load and speed ratings. Vehicle-approved specifications, run-flat requirements and front/rear differences also matter.
Before you book
Use the handbook and the tyres currently fitted as references, but have compatibility checked before ordering. A registration number alone may not identify modifications or optional wheel sizes.
